All of our tote bags and belts are fastened with Australian made brass rivets. Theses are sourced locally and have been tested for strength and durability. The aging process with these rivets will take affect with use and as the oxidisation process sets in the rivets will end up with that antique and rustic feel to add to the bags character. All rivets are individually peened on our Anvil, which has seen over a centuries worth of blacksmithing work.
At STOIC, we have travelled both locally and through the US sourcing the finest leather from the most traditional tanneries, who still use age old methods of tanning hides learnt from their forefathers over many generations.
It is important to us and our brand to honour these traditions, as seen throughout our products.
Leather is a natural material whose durability, texture and beauty make it one of the most popular materials on today’s market. All of the natural range markings are visible which may be the result of where a cow had been in the wild and its natural elements, whether that is rubbing up against a tree, being scraped by barb wire, attacked by wild predators or just being a cow, our leather recognises and promotes these markings to differentiate it from over processed and imitation leathers.
Through the tanning process each hide has its unique grain and patterns and no two leather pieces are identical, with subtleties of colour and texture being infused by this process. Over time and use, each piece of leather will take on a life of its own, it will mature and darken and the natural oils will rise to the surface giving them a rich patina which will be personalised to you through your travels.
At Stoic we use 10 -12 Oz leather from some of the oldest tanneries in the USA and Australia for our carry straps. This type of leather is finished using one of the oldest tanning techniques, known as “vegetable tanned”. This tanning process uses vegetable materials derived from tree bark and other various plants and is drum dyed with waxes and tallows in order to give a beautifully finished and great feeling leather. This English bridle leather is available on all of the Stoic shoulder and carry straps along with the fastening straps anchored in by our unique brass rivets which are hand peened.
WAXED COTTON CANVAS
Waxed cotton is, as the name suggests, cotton impregnated with a paraffin based wax, woven into a cloth. Widely used from the mid-19th century to now, the product, which originated in the sailing industry in England and Scotland, became widely used by many for waterproofing.
With its origin in historic European marine trading, Waxed Cotton Canvas has been used for over a century to produce outdoor gear that could withstand inclement and varying weather conditions of outdoor environments and day-to-day demanding use.
A natural and proprietary combination of waxes are heat-applied to the cotton canvas to produce a breathable and water resistant thick material that is timeless and gives a semblance of rugged sophistication. Our Waxed Cotton Canvas is sourced from one of the oldest textile suppliers in the US.
When cared for properly, this unique fabric will last you many, many years. As wax and cotton are both natural products, their effectiveness in resistance to water will eventually need to be restored using a re-waxing process that can be performed by yourself.
If the accumulation of dust and stains on your bag are not your thing, no problem, just hose it off and scrub with a brush. Bare areas can be refinished with a wax refinishing compound which can help restore the wax finish. Do not wash or dry clean this material.
We also use duck cotton canvas, that while also water repellent, it does not have a surface wax coating applied. Instead, a proprietary water repellant finish is impregnated into the fabric during the dyeing process.
The other canvas used in our range is duck cotton canvas since it offers a wider variety of colour selections and a finished product that weighs less than a full waxed canvas bag.
